The Gold Standard of Metal Roofing

Standing seam roofing is widely recognized as the highest-performance metal roofing system available today. Its defining feature is the raised interlocking seam that connects adjacent panels, creating a continuous, weather-tight barrier with absolutely no exposed fasteners penetrating the roof surface.

This concealed fastener design is what separates standing seam from all other metal roofing systems. Every screw or nail that penetrates a roof surface is a potential leak point. Standing seam eliminates that risk entirely. The panels are secured to the roof deck with concealed clips that allow the metal to expand and contract naturally with temperature changes, preventing the buckling, oil-canning, and fastener back-out issues common in exposed fastener systems.

Greenleaf Roofing installs standing seam metal roofing for both residential and commercial applications across the DFW metroplex. Our experienced metal roofing crews have the specialized training and equipment required to deliver flawless standing seam installations that perform for decades.

How Standing Seam Systems Work

Understanding the engineering behind standing seam roofing helps you appreciate why it outperforms every other roofing system on the market.

Snap-Lock Panels

Snap-lock standing seam panels feature a male and female leg on adjacent panels that simply snap together during installation. This system is efficient to install, does not require specialized seaming equipment, and creates a secure, weather-tight connection. Snap-lock panels are an excellent choice for residential applications and commercial projects with moderate wind exposure.

Snap-lock seam heights typically range from 1 inch to 1.75 inches, and panels are available in widths of 12 to 18 inches. The panels are secured to the deck with concealed clips that allow for thermal expansion and contraction.

Mechanical Lock Panels

Mechanical lock standing seam panels provide the highest level of seam integrity and wind resistance. After the panels are positioned, a mechanical seaming machine rolls along each seam to create a tight, crimped connection. Mechanical lock systems are available in single-lock (90-degree fold) and double-lock (180-degree fold) configurations.

Double-lock mechanical seam panels are the standard for high-wind, high-performance applications and are required by many building codes in hurricane-prone and high-wind zones. This is the system engineers specify when absolute weather integrity is non-negotiable.

Performance Advantages

  • Zero Exposed Fasteners — No screws or nails penetrate the roof surface, eliminating the most common source of metal roof leaks. Exposed fastener systems typically require re-torquing or replacement of gaskets within 10 to 15 years. Standing seam does not.
  • Thermal Movement Accommodation — Concealed clip attachment allows panels to expand and contract freely with temperature changes. DFW temperatures can swing 60 degrees or more between summer days and winter nights, creating tremendous stress on rigid fastener connections.
  • Wind Resistance to 140+ MPH — Standing seam systems are engineered and tested to withstand extreme wind speeds. The interlocking seam design resists wind uplift forces that would tear exposed fastener panels from the deck.
  • Hail Resistance — The thick-gauge steel used in standing seam panels (typically 24 or 26 gauge) resists hail damage that would require replacement of asphalt shingles. Many standing seam systems carry Class 4 impact ratings.
  • Clean, Modern Aesthetics — The smooth, uninterrupted panel lines of standing seam roofing create a sophisticated appearance that complements both modern and traditional architecture. Over 40 color options are available.
  • Solar Panel Ready — Standing seam panels accept non-penetrating solar panel mounting clamps that attach directly to the seams, eliminating the need to drill into the roof surface to install a solar array.

Residential & Commercial Applications

Standing seam metal roofing is versatile enough for virtually any building type. Here are some of the most common applications we install across DFW.

Residential Applications

Standing seam is increasingly popular for DFW homes, from new custom builds to re-roofing existing homes. It is particularly well-suited to:

  • Custom and luxury homes seeking a distinctive roofline
  • Homes with steep roof pitches that showcase the panel lines
  • Homeowners who want a permanent roofing solution
  • Properties in hail-prone areas looking to eliminate future claims
  • Eco-conscious homeowners prioritizing sustainable materials
  • Homes with solar panel installations planned

Standing seam panels can be installed on roof pitches as low as 1:12, making them suitable for nearly any residential roof configuration. For lower slopes, mechanical lock seam profiles provide the additional weather integrity needed.

Commercial Applications

In the commercial sector, standing seam metal roofing delivers a compelling combination of long service life, low maintenance, and architectural appeal. Common commercial applications include:

  • Office buildings and corporate campuses
  • Retail centers and storefronts
  • Churches and worship facilities
  • Schools and educational buildings
  • Medical and healthcare facilities
  • Multi-family residential complexes

For commercial properties, the 50+ year lifespan of standing seam means dramatically lower lifecycle costs compared to membrane or shingle systems that require replacement every 15 to 25 years. The reduced maintenance burden is equally valuable for property managers and building owners.

Materials & Finish Options

Galvalume Steel

The industry standard substrate for standing seam panels. Galvalume is a steel sheet coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy that provides exceptional corrosion resistance. Available in 24 gauge (heavier, premium) and 26 gauge (standard) thicknesses.

Kynar 500 Paint System

The gold standard in metal roof coatings. Kynar 500 (PVDF) paint systems resist fading, chalking, and color change for decades. These coatings maintain their appearance through the intense Texas UV exposure that degrades lesser paint systems within a few years.

40+ Color Options

From classic charcoal gray and matte black to rich earth tones, deep blues, and forest greens, our standing seam panels are available in an extensive palette. Custom color matching is also available for projects that require a specific shade.
